Swimming is undoubtedly a very important life skill but in this blog I am also going to tell you why you should consider swimming as your main sport.
Firstly swimming is one of the best forms of cardio as you don’t get too hot due to the cold water and unlike running it does not only focus on your legs so the muscle soreness is spread out a whole lot more.
It’s also great for building strong muscles that can withstand a lot, thanks to swimming being mostly endurance
Swimming mostly focuses on:
-Core
-Triceps
-Shoulders
-Back
-Quadriceps
If you extremely enjoy swimming then you can try competing. You can do this by yourself but it is way easier if you join a team and compete for them. Meets (competitions) are a great way to track your progress and have fun.
Another thing that swimming has is diversity, some of the major aspects in swimming are:
-The 4 strokes (fly,back,breast,front)
-Diving
-Open Turns
-Closed Turns
-Underwater phases
-Breakout
-Finishes
-Drills
All the things listed above are very different to train this leads to major session diversity.
Swimming is also very accessible because the water allows you to freely move your body and can be an amazing feeling for people with physical disabilities. Swimming is also a very friendly and non-judgmental sport, so don’t feel that you can’t join in and have a good time. As Well as that swimming is one of the most popular paralympic sports. Just try it!
Overall swimming is an amazing sport and you should definitely try it if this blog caught your interest.

Hello , I am registered severely sighted, plus hearing impaired, . Do you have lessons / teach swimming? It’s something I know I must learn , at the moment I don’t go in unless someone is with me, and I can hold on to them . Please tell me more. Many thanks.
Hi Mark,
Unfortunately, we aren’t trained in swimming yet and the facilities in Eastbourne aren’t quite up to scratch.
Our best suggestion for the time being is the Blue Lagoon. You can find more information about them here: https://1space.eastsussex.gov.uk/Services/3546/The-Blue-Lagoon
Hi. My sister in law is approaching 60, has cerebral palsy and is mostly wheelchair bound but can walk with a Walker for a very short distance. She has expressed an interest in swimming. Is this something you can help with or can you recommend an organisation that can help her please
Hi Stella, Unfortunately, we aren’t yet trained in water sports and the facilities in Eastbourne aren’t super accessible. The best we can suggest is The Blue Lagoon.

Really sorry that we can’t be of more help. Please do take a look at our eequ page to see what sports we currently offer, and some we can add to our timetable if enough interest is shown: https://eequ.org/search-learning-experiences?q=defiant+sports Hopefully there is something of interest to your sister in law.
