The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics and Paralympics have been postponed from 2020 to this year, due to concerns stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Olympics will run from tomorrow, Friday 23rd July, to Sunday 8th August, and the Paralympics will run from Tuesday 24th August to Sunday 5th September.
Some of the sports included in the Olympics are archery, athletics, diving, swimming, and tennis. The Paralympics includes such sports as boccia, rowing, sitting volleyball, and table tennis. The full list for the Olympics can be found here, and the full list for the Paralympics can be found here.
There are a number of athletes competing for Great Britain in both games, including the following:
- Laura Kenny, 29, cyclist with four gold medals
- Carl Hester, 54, equestrian with two gold medals, oldest Olympic competitor for Great Britain
- Sky Brown, 13, skateboarder, youngest Olympic competitor for Great Britain
- Sarah Storey, 43, Paralympic cyclist with fourteen gold medals
The Olympics will be available to watch in the UK on BBC One, and the Paralympics will be featured on Channel 4. Note that the UK is 8 hours ahead of Japan, so a lot of the live coverage will be during unsociable hours.
If you enjoy watching the sports and may wish to take part in person, we are pleased to offer some of them, including boccia, disability football, sitting volleyball, table tennis, and visually-impaired tennis. Contact us on info@defiantsports.org.uk or 07887755856 to find out more!
As always, stay defiant!
