Eastbourne Access Group create an annual guide of accessibility in Eastbourne, and it was just updated again in April. This guide highlights the accessibility of Eastbourne in areas such as the Town Centre. Terminus Road now has no curbs or crossings, and low edged planters and tactile paving separate the bus lane and sidewalk! The guide also has maps for wheelchair and scooter users. They have maps for Hampden Park, Town Centre, Old Town and Sovereign Harbour so wherever you want to go in Eastbourne, the guide has you covered. If you’re in need of accessible toilets and changing places toilets, this is in the guide too. They also have lots of information on various shopping locations and their respective accessibility levels, along with the accommodations that are provided. The Access Group have been active in Eastbourne for 40 Years! They first started meeting in 1981 and have been constant supporters of a more accessible Eastbourne. A quick browse of their website and meeting minutes just shows how important they have been! Without them, projects such as unisex toilets, minibus parking and affordable long stay parking at the Beacon Centre would not have been introduced to city council. More recently, the Disability Involvement Group was created in 2007; 2009 saw the extension of the Blue Badge parking bay on Gildredge Road for wheelchair unloading; and 2018 saw the organisation of the Accessible Walk in Lewes and Eastbourne to make the Downs more accessible.
This is an amazing group that needs to be more well-known, as they have done wonders for our community to make it so accessible to everyone. Be sure to check them out!
