International Mixed Ability Sports

IMAS, International Mixed Ability Sports, is a social movement centred around breaking barriers to participation in sports. They aim to change our current perception of how we participate in and enjoy sports, creating a community that accepts everyone.

As part of what they do, they run sessions such as Mixed Ability football which is walking football aimed at beginners or for those who struggle with mobility but open to anyone over 18 who wishes to take part.

One of the major things IMAS does is their Mixed Ability rugby, this year running their largest men’s Rugby tournament to date and their first ever Women’s tournament – the IMART 2022 (International Mixed Ability Rugby Tournament).

IMAS also offers training – Creative programmes run by those who have faced barriers to participation, encouraging full participation to challenge your views and open your eyes to how you can engage with your team and customers.

They also have an awards scheme aimed at coaches, clubs, or partners and national governing bodies, which train you in various ways. Coaches can be taught to provide Mixed Ability session, and clubs can be taught to provide a safe, non-judgemental environment. At the end of the training, you will be awarded certification/accreditation.

As a community focused on inclusion, this movement speaks to us and is something we’re happy to see. If you wish to learn more, you can check out their website here or Facebook here.

As always, stay Defiant!
