The Benefits of Music and Exercise

This week we’re talking all about music, because who doesn’t love music? More specifically, we’ll be telling you how beneficial music is when you listen to it during exercise.

Music helps make working out fun and enjoyable. If you are unable to find a buddy to run with or go to the gym with, at least you will have some tunes to sing along to and entertain you while you work out! Music has also been shown to elevate your mood and distract you while you are exercising. These two benefits are huge, because it allows you to forget about the tiresome act of running or cycling or lifting and just be taken over by the beat of your music. Another great benefit, and this one can help those of you who are starting the Couch to 5km Challenge, is that music helps you keep pace while you run! People tend to synchronise their steps to the beat of whatever song they may be listening to, and this helps conserve energy while running.

Music is so beneficial to improving physical performance during exercise, that USA Track and Field has banned any competitive athlete from listening to music during a race. What’s more, individuals have been recorded performing more efficiently, and with higher power output while listening to music opposed to listening to nothing.  They also record higher enthusiasm for the workout, as they enjoyed their time more when music was playing.

Why are we talking about all of this you may ask? It’s because tomorrow, 12th May is the very first day of our DiscoFit! These sessions are a part of the Mencap Round the World Challenge. Come listen to some great music, have a groovy workout with some friends whilst listening to disco tunes, and earn points as you travel around the globe through exercise! To take part in these FREE sessions, just turn up on Wednesdays 4pm-5pm at the Inclusion Hub.

As always, stay defiant!
