Last Saturday, 13th November on Strictly Come Dancing, the first ever deaf contestant performed a dance that was awarded a near perfect score of 39/40!
The contestant, Rose Ayling-Ellis, 26, and her dance partner, Giovanni Pernice, 31, performed to a song where halfway through it turned to silence in a display of what it is like in a deaf person’s world. This stunning move shocked the judges and audience alike.
The wonderful performance brought more curiosity to many people about the experience of being deaf and as a result, an interest in sign language. Sign Language is a very useful way to aid people who are deaf, mute, or otherwise would have trouble vocally. This performance brings hope that more and more people will want to learn sign language. #TeamDefiant have just finished their Makaton training, further instilling inclusion in all that we do, and inclusion in sports for all.
This display helps to tell people that those without hearing or with limited hearing also have potential to do amazing things within sports. This representation is very encouraging to those who may feel like they have no place participating in sports. It shows them that if they have an interest in sports they can be included – that they can do great things.
