Cerebral palsy is a group of disabilities caused by the brain not developing properly before birth, or being damaged during/soon after birth. Cerebral palsy becomes noticeable within 2-3 years of the child’s birth and can cause problems such as weak limbs, fidgety or clumsy movement, delays in developmental milestones, learning disabilities, and more.
It can make many things in life difficult, one of these being participating in regular physical activity and sport – However it doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Many sports can be adapted, allowing those who are commonly blocked from participating, a chance to get active. As shown through our very own CP player, Callum’s, success!
The International Federation of CP Football, IFCPF, is the national governing body for cerebral palsy football. Cerebral palsy football, formerly known as 7-a-side football, is for athletes with cerebral palsy, or an acquired brain injury. It has a few changes from the common rules of football such as 7 players being on the field, a smaller pitch and goal posts, and it being split into two 15-minute playing periods.
They’re also responsible for running the IFCPF World Cup which was held in Salou this year throughout April and May. England did well to place 6th in Men’s, with Ukraine placing 1st, and USA winning the women’s cup which England weren’t a part of. We hope you managed to catch some of the matches, and if not we hope this at least inspires you to give CP football a go! You can check out CP Football providers here.
As always, stay Defiant!
